E Whitman & Sons One Pound Private Trader’s Note (Unissued Remainder) 190- about Unc
Location: Birdsville (Western Queensland)
Period of Issue: circa 1900
An attractive private trader’s note from regional QLD in the early 1900s.
Birdsville is a small town in Western Queensland, 1,590 kilometres west of Brisbane and on the edge of the Simpson desert.
Two issued notes from E Whitman & Sons are held in important public collections (that of the National Australia Bank and the Dixson Library, in the State Library of New South Wales) - the latter note was dated 1904.
I've seen a few articles that cover the background of the merchants in regional Queensland that issued their own trader's notes from the late 1800s through to the early 1900s, Whitman and Sons were regarded as being the largest among them.
I recall them being described as being "the Cobb and Co of the West" (Western Queensland that is). Their commercial interests spanned a number of activities and a number of different towns and areas. The Whitman brothers are credited for doing much to "open up" areas of Western Queensland.
This particular note looks exactly as one might expect an unissued remainder that is over a hundred years old to look - it has crisp and original paper and remains very close to mint condition, but for a few light bends in the body of the note.
It is a presentable and very scarce reminder of the role that private merchants played in the circulating currency of regional Australia in the early 1900s.
