As the images here show, the bottom portion of the note has been cut off.
This is the result of the official cancellation technique employed by the printer, Perkins & Bacon of London.
Proofs such as this note were printed with the same inks and on very similar stock to the notes that were printed for circulation, which meant if any of the proofs were to fall into the wrong hands, there was a very high likelihood they could be altered via the addition of spurious signatures and passed into circulation.
The rather brutal cancellation technique employed by Perkins & Bacon ensured there would be no incentive for their archives of proof notes to be burglarised - the highly detailed perimeter designs simply cannot be re-created with any degree of accuracy.
Although an incomplete printer’s proof does not have the same appeal as a complete proof note, it remains a graphic representation of the issued counterpart, and may be acquired at a fraction of the price.
