The Coinage & Currency in New South Wales (1788 - 1829) Hardcover Book
Includes: An Index of Currency References in the Sydney Gazette 1803 - 1811
Written by Dr W.J. Mira, Published by the Metropolitan Coin Club of Sydney (1981)
Hardcover and Illustrated (Black and white), 206 pages.
This is an important reference work on the colonial coinage of Australia.
Although he is no longer with us, Dr Bill Mira has long been regarded as being Australia's foremost authority on the history of the very first coins struck on Australian soil, the Holey Dollar and the Dump.
Bill's knowledge was built up over an extended period of time via exhaustive research in the various historical archives of New South Wales - the records of the Sydney Mint, the State Libraries of New South Wales (including the Mitchell and Dixson Libraries), the Historic Houses Trust, as well as the Powerhouse Museum.
Dr Mira's primary research into the background to the Holey Dollar and the Dump is also without peer - he built on the work done by Philip Spalding, Walter Roth and Arthur Andrews before him, and tracked the history of the production of these historic silver coins in minute detail.
Dr Mira was the first numismatist to posit a location of "The Factory", that is the location where Henshall struck Australia's first coins, and he was also the first numismatist to clearly explain the most likely method by which Henshall produced our nation's first circulating coinage.
For any collector with a passing interest in the coinage and currency of Australia's colonial period, this book is well worth purchasing. Not only does it cover the subjects outlined above, it also lists many of the primary references (in the Sydney Gazette) that Mira used in his research.
Even several decades after it was published, this book remains an essential title in any respectable Australian numismatic library.
