Australia 2015 Uncirculated Mint Coin Set 50th Anniversary of the Royal Australian Mint
Renniks 1966 Decimal Currency Changeover Souvenir Coin Album
An attractive privately-issued wallet commemorating the introduction of decimal currency in 1966.
The 50 anniversary of the introduction of decimal currency to Australia was marked in 2016, and with it came an increased demand for a wide range of collectables related to the 14th of February, 1966.
Although the Royal Australian Mint released the 1966 mint / Uncirculated sets early on in the piece, the packaging of these was rather plain, and they were only available directly from the Mint in Canberra, at least initially. The official proof sets of 1966-dated coins were not released by the Royal Australian Mint until October 1967 - some 18 months after the first decimal coins entered circulation around Australia.
Both of these facts meant that there was good demand from the general public for sets of coins that were attractive and could house sets of both the old pre-decimal coins, as well as the new decimal coins that replaced them.
This particular souvenir album was put together by Renniks, who has made a wide range of albums for Australian coins from the mid-1960s.
The Renniks 1966 Souvenir Coin Album looks to be far scarcer than the Hendo albums put out at the same time - this particular wallet remains in excellent condition, as do the coins that are included in it.
The pre-decimal silver coins grade between good EF and Uncirculated, while the pre-decimal copper coins are the same grade, but have a deep tone.
The round 50¢ grades around good EF, while the decimal coins grade about Unc ~ Uncirculated.
The decimal copper coins remain in pretty good condition.
