New Zealand Bank of NSW 1923 Ten Shillings Unissued Specimen Pick# S.161 about Unc
Front: Female personification and upper centre, denomination at top left and right
Back: Blank
This scarce note is a remainder from NZ's pre-federation system.
On face value (pardon the pun), this note looks to be an Australian pre-federation note, issued by the Bank of New South Wales (NSW), for use in Australia.
That is not the case however. This is an unissued specimen of a note definitely issued by the Bank of New South Wales, but for use in New Zealand, rather than Australia.
The Bank of NSW opened it's first branch in New Zealand in 1861, and was one of around ten "trading banks" that issued their own currency notes for use in New Zealand prior to the establishment of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand in 1934.
I believe this specimen (and others like it) were printed just prior to the introduction of the "uniform" note issues of 1923 / 1924. The following information can be found in the "New Zealand Coin & Banknote Catalogue" by John Bertrand:
"Although designs still varied widely between the Trading Banks, from 1923/24, New Zealand trading banks agreed to issue each denomination with roughly corresponding colours and sizes to assist the public, businesses and bank staff to more easily identify each issue on sight. Notes from this period are referred to as being from the 'Uniform' Issue."
The note has been perforated as a specimen, and most likely came from the archives of the printer (Charles Skipper & East) once it ceased doing business.
