Ex-Batavia coins without water damage are very seldom seen, this is one of them.
If you haven't heard of the Batavia shipwreck, you truly have missed out on a story of depravity and barbarity that is known the world over. Not only is the story of the mutiny, wreck and recovery of the Batavia an incredible tale, but the coins recovered from it are also incredibly rare.
If you'd like to learn more about the background of the historic shipwreck that this coin was recovered from, click this link to read our article.
This particular coin remains in far better quality than most examples we see. It retains a lot of detail on both sides and has an attractive smoky patina that is very seldom seen on ex-wreck coins, due to the chemicals used in the restoration process.
If you've been looking for an attractive and scarce coin that represents the Batavia shipwreck, this is certainly one to consider.
Special Note Regarding Possession and Export:
Potential buyers should be aware that there are certain legal obligations when it comes to having possession of important heritage items such as this coin - permits are required before selling or otherwise disposing of a shipwreck relic.
We handle ex-wreck coins reasonably regularly, so although the paperwork involved in the transfer process might appear a little daunting to the uninitiated, we're able to walk you through it to ensure that the transaction is legal and hassle-free.
Removal of shipwreck relics such as coins from Australia without a Historic Shipwreck permit for sale or transfer of a shipwreck relic is prohibited by the Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976. A permit under the Protection of Movable Cultural Heritage Act 1986 may also be required. In our experience, for all intents and purposes, coins recovered from historic wrecks off the West Australian coast cannot be exported overseas.
