Well struck and with superb surfaces.
The gold ducat mentioned in Governor King's proclamation was first minted by the Republic of the United Netherlands in the 16th century.
It was highly regarded by our colonial forefathers: they accepted them and they spent them. According to Dr Bill Mira in his study of the Sydney Gazette, 1803~1811, Captain Arthur Phillip carried Dutch ducats with him on the First Fleet in 1788: Lord Nepean had specifically procured them for him through a request by letter to Treasury several months before the First Fleet's departure.
This story clearly illustrates that the ducat was very important to the well-being of the young settlement at New South Wales.
Without it, Phillip may not have been able to procure the supplies essential to the colony's survival, and the history we accept today may have been quite different.
Colonial records indicate that several desperate trips for provisions were made from New South Wales to the Dutch settlements of the Cape of Good Hope and Batavia while the colony was in its infancy.
The Dutch brig Waaksamheyd arrived at Sydney from Batavia in December 1790 - its cargo of flour, rice and salt was surely a welcome relief.
Spalding suggests that the Waaksamheyd's arrival would have precipitated the gradual infiltration of Dutch coins into colonial Australia.
(Whether they were the ducats and guilders of King's proclamation is another matter altogether!)
