Murray & Breene (Eromanga) Undated 10 Shillings Private Trader's Note Very Good (Mounted on card)
Location: Eromanga (South West Queensland)
This note is one of just three examples sighted from this issuer to date.
Wikipedia states that the town of Eromanga has a population ranging between 30 and 40.
"Reginald Breene commenced his working life in the gold mines at Ravenswood, Queensland. After mining for 19 years he moved to Brisbane where he was employed as a tram driver.
After a number of years in Brisbane Reginald moved to Eromanga where he operated a general store and post office exchange together with mail contracts.
After many years in Eromanga Reginald moved to Quilpie where he managed local hotels. He finally retired to Brisbane.
Whilst residing at Eromanga, Reginald was responsible for the construction of the first main road from Quilpie to Eromanga. He was also the person responsible for the construction of the sewerage system in Quilpie.
Reginald Breene loved the west and its residents and was a noted raconteur of life in that area.
The community roles that Breene is known to have held are listed as being: Coroner; Justice of the Peace; Chairman of Quilpie Hospital Board; Deputy Chairman Quilpie Shire Council; Member of Quilpie Fire Brigade Board; Secretary of Eromanga Race Club."
Based on the information above, we believe this note was printed for use between the early to mid-1900s. A comparison of the paper and print style, along with an understanding of the coverage that banks made into Queensland, narrows that date down to the 1920s and the 1930s.
