James Burns (Normanton) Unissued One Pound Private Trader's Note Very Fine
Location: Normanton (Far North Queensland)
Period of Issue: 1879 ~ 1883
This is an unissued note form dating to the foundation of one of Australia's largest trading houses.
Normanton is a small outback cattle town and coastal locality in the Shire of Carpentaria in Queensland, Australia. It currently has a population of around 1,210 people.
Online records indicate that James Burns set up in business in Normanton in 1879 and amalgamated with Robert Philp in 1883.
A book covering the history of the Burns Philp company states "The manager of the store issued its own £1 and £5 notes for use as change, in an environment where "legal tender" was hard to come by. The notes were used in Normanton and Thursday Island for a period of around ten years between 1880 and 1890."
It also states that "...by the early 1980s, Burns Philp was a conglomerate that controlled over 200 companies involved in about 100 separate industries." Burns Philp was not delisted until December 2006, nearly 130 years after these notes were printed.
This unissued form clearly dates to the foundational years of one of Australia's largest and longest-lasting trading houses.
