Heads I Win - Limited Edition Hardcover Book on Australia’s Most Audacious Coin Forger David Gee
Don Thomas & Jeffrey Watson; , "Heads I Win", Harper Collins, Sydney, 1986, Hardcover, Black and White, 175 pages.
This book is incredibly hard to come by, and is essential reading for any Australian collector.
The name David Gee is not as well known by Australian numismatists and coin collectors as it should be - this man produced many, if not nearly all, of the most accurate and dangerous fakes available to collectors today.
This compelling book covers the prosecution’s case against David Gee in what remains the biggest case made by the Commonwealth Government against a coin or currency counterfeiter in Australian history.
It explores Gee’s background, how he was able to gain access to Australia’s rarest and most historic coins, how he was able to counterfeit them, and also how he was caught and prosecuted.
The book is essential reading for any collector that wants to protect themselves against unintentionally buying a valuable counterfeit coin, and also anyone with an interest in the Australian coin collector market.
The circumstances of David Gee’s colourful history make for incredible reading - it really is amazing what he was able to get away with, and also how he went about his craft.
One of the authors was a former presenter of the Beyond 2000 television series, a man that clearly had an eye or ear for a compelling story. Gee was in fact interviewed by Ray Martin for an episode of 60 Minutes in the late 1970’s, which shows just how notorious he had become.
I firmly believe this book should be in every Australian numismatic library - it is as much an instruction manual on what to avoid as it is a cautionary tale.
It really is quite difficult to get these days, this copy remains in presentable condition.
