A bold example of this archaic Bank of England note style.
When they were first issued, British banknotes were hand-written, and were not even partially printed until 1725. Even following the introduction of the printing process at that time, a cashier still needed to sign each note, and make it payable to someone.
Notes issued by the Bank of England were fully printed from 1855 onwards - only the front of each note was printed in black ink. This printing style remained in place until 1928, when it was gradually phased out with the intaglio / simultan process that had been used by many other countries around the world for several decades by then.
As a result of their archaic printing style, these Bank of England notes are referred to by collectors as "white" notes - we describe them as archaic as the design you see above had been essentially unchanged since 1793!
This particular note remains in attractive condition - the note does have some folding throughout the body, but retains good colour and paper quality.
It is a bold example of this archaic Bank of England note style.
