Great Britain 1925 Bronze Medallion British Empire Exhibition In Original Presentation Case
Diameter: 51mm
Weight: 67.50g
This is a solid memento from what was an important event in the evolving history of the British Commonwealth.
Following the end of the First World War, British officials apparently became aware that the dynamics of the relationship Britain had with the nations that made up the British Empire.
It was hoped that the Exhibition would strengthen the bonds within the Empire, stimulate trade and demonstrate British greatness both abroad and at home.
A purpose built “great national sports ground”, called the Empire Stadium, was built for the Exhibition - this venue is now known as the famous Wembley Stadium.
27 million visitors attended across the two-year period that the event ran, this medal was one of a number struck to celebrate the occasion.
The obverse is a superb representation of the Mackennal portrait of King George V - it is represented here in far sharper (and larger) detail than seen on Australia's circulating coinage from the same period.
