Great Britain 1797 Proof Copper Cartwheel Twopence George III
Reference Number: S# 3776
Quality Grade: PCGS PR63BN
A superb example of the largest coin struck by Great Britain.
I know a few collectors of Australian proclamation and colonial coins who choose to set themselves a mighty objective once they complete their first set - they seek to build a set of the same coins in proof form. Proof coins dating to the 18th century were struck in far smaller numbers than the modern proofs that 21st-century collectors enjoy today, which means such a set takes time, patience and a healthy wallet.
The Cartwheel copper coin series offers a great deal of enjoyment for the keen student - identifying die varieties can be a truly enjoyable exercise. A thorough review of Peck's "English Copper, Tin and Bronze Coins in the British Museum 1558-1958" tells us that this particular coin is identified as #1069 in his listing.
It has been sharply struck and the surfaces remain in pristine condition. It remains a superb example of the largest coin struck by Great Britain.
