Full-colour and hardbound; this book contains a comprehensive history of Australia’s gold coinage.
This book contains a wealth of information about the history and characteristics of Australia's gold sovereigns.
It was written by Andrew Crellin and was published by the Perth Mint.
Although the Perth Mint isn't regularly in the business of publishing books, "Australia's Sovereigns" was effectively the packaging for an exclusive gold coin that the Perth Mint struck in 2005 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Australia's first sovereign.
The coins were manufactured to the exact same specifications as the first sovereigns struck on Australian soil, and were embedded in the front of the cover of the book.
Although the stated mintage for the coin (and thus the book) was 7,500, it's known that the coin didn't completely sell-out. Further to that, a small number of the 7,500 coins struck were sent to NGC for grading - those US collectors received a book without the gold coin embedded in the cover. At this stage, I believe no more than a few hundred copies were made available in this format.
The book provides an in-depth exploration of the history behind Australia's circulating gold coinage, it covers the designs used on them, as well as the Mints at which they were struck. The key date of each design type is explored in detail, there are also hints that enable collectors to learn more about the points to check when assessing the quality of the sovereigns they buy.
All in all, this is a truly informative book, well-presented and exclusive.
