This historic coin has solid detail right across both sides.
If you haven't heard of the Batavia shipwreck, you truly have missed out on a story of depravity and barbarity that is known the world over.
Not only is the story of the mutiny, wreck and recovery of the Batavia an incredible tale, but the coins recovered from it are also incredibly rare.
Just 1,442 coins recovered from the Batavia shipwreck can be legally owned.
WA Museum research shows that only 15% of those are thought to be in "collectable" condition.
The tale of the Batavia also has consequences for the known history of white settlement in Australia - throw in a good measure of controversy surrounding the discovery of the wreck in 1963, and you have a yarn with so many threads you will want to learn every aspect of this story for months to come.
The coins recovered from the Batavia were mainly silver Rijksdaalders of the United Netherlands and the Spanish Netherlands and a wide variety of Talers from the German States, cities and bishoprics of the Holy Roman Empire under the authority of the emperor who was elected from the Arch Dukes of Austria.
This particular coin from the wreck of the Batavia was struck in the German state of Hamburg. It is technically a 32 schilling piece but is universally classed as a thaler.
The city of Hamburg issued coins almost continuously until the end of World War One. The Hamburg mint is still in operation and produces coins for the Republic of Germany.
The state emblem for Hamburg can still be clearly seen on the obverse of this coin - it is the castle that was built by Emperor Charlemagne in 808 AD.
A crowned double eagle can still be clearly seen on the reverse - the value (32) is shown on an orb in front of the eagle's breast, the legend runs around the edge.

Special Note Regarding Possession and Export:
Potential buyers should be aware that there are certain legal obligations when it comes to having possession of important heritage items such as this coin - permits are required before selling or otherwise disposing of a shipwreck relic.
We handle ex-wreck coins reasonably regularly, so although the paperwork involved in the transfer process might appear a little daunting to the uninitiated, we're able to walk you through it to ensure that the transaction is legal and hassle-free.
Removal of shipwreck relics such as coins from Australia without a Historic Shipwreck permit for sale or transfer of a shipwreck relic is prohibited by the Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976.
A permit under the Protection of Movable Cultural Heritage Act 1986 may also be required.
In our experience, for all intents and purposes, coins recovered from historic wrecks off the West Australian coast cannot be exported overseas.
