Strong detail in the crown, a good portion of the host coin is evident across the reverse also.

As one of the first coins struck on Australian soil, this incredibly rare coin is fundamental to any collection of Australian coins.

The historical importance of the Dump is often overlooked, however it played just as much of a role in solving New South Wales' currency woes as the Holey Dollar. The way Henshall cut and struck the Dump determined whether both coins remained in circulation.

It's been quite some years since values of Dumps have been at affordable levels. The relatively high clearance rates for them at recent auctions however show that values have come back to a level where broad-based interest in them is renewed.

Nearly all of the cheaper Dumps that remain in existence have some qualification to their grade - they have a major cut, knock or corrosion that detracts from us appreciating the coin's history.

This particular Dump has as much detail in the crown on the obverse as would be expected on a much higher quality coin, and has a good portion of the host coin evident in sections of the reverse.

In his booklet on the NSW Dump from 1990, Bill Mira stated that Dumps showing this level of detail from the host coin are the exception and not the rule:

"...there are Dumps which show almost all the original design plus the counterstamp, these were almost certainly accidentally struck cold ... it is reasonable to deduce that the counter-stamp pressure, if applied at the right planchet temperature, was sufficient to obliterate the original design - as the temperature varied, so did the retention of original pattern."

Only 25% of the dumps that remain available to collectors were struck with the D/2 pair of dies.

This is a solid example of one of the first coins struck on Australian soil.

It stands apart from many others that are in the same price range, in that it has sections of the host coin evident across the reverse.
