Coke couldn't give these away when they were made, they're much more popular now!
I was working in Sydney at Monetarium when the good people in the Coca Cola marketing department dreamed up a special promotion to give away a certain number of gold tokens (modelled on the Australian sovereign) as one of their giveaways.
The sovereigns were initially given away to folks that went to the trouble of filling in a coupon and sending it in via the post.
You'd think people would be falling over themselves to get a free gold sovereign, yet the contest was so UNpopular with the general public, Coke had to run a second-chance offer to ensure that the full mintage was accounted for.
Gold certainly wasn't an asset that was popular back in 1997 - keep in mind that it was trading for about $500 / ozt just a few years after this promotion was run, that was the absolute depth of the gold market in Australia in recent years.
They wouldn't have any such problems today of course - free gold seems like a crazy idea.
The tokens/sovereigns themselves weigh 7.40 grams of 24-carat gold, and so are 0.2379 of a Troy ounce, which is ever so slightly more gold than a real gold sovereign.
They're still popular with collectors of Coke memorabilia, as well as with folks keen to get interesting bits of gold.
