Brazil (Rio de Janeiro) Gold 6,400 Reis 1766-R KM#172.2 NGC AU58
Obverse: Laureate bust of Joseph to right, legend around and date below
Reverse: Coronate shield with ornate scrollwork
Proclamation value: £2.0.0
NGC Certificate Number: 4882223-014
Minimal friction is evident on the obverse, lustre abouts throughout the reverse.
The Half Johanna (6,400 reis) was large enough to be used alone for sizeable transactions, yet small enough to remain relevant for many decades. It circulated throughout the civilised world for much of the 18th and early 19th centuries, and also had a solid reputation for consistent purity and weight.
The proclaimed value of the Half Johanna meant that it would have taken the average colonist quite some time to earn its equivalent of £2 – equal to some eight days wages. Like the Johanna, it would rarely have been seen by the average colonist and would have remained in the realm of the entrepreneur and the international trader.
There is no doubt that the ‘off-shore’ transactions conducted by emancipist traders with the Americans and British were of quite sizeable amounts, regularly figuring in the order of hundreds and thousands of pounds.
This particular example retains strong detail both sides, and has just a hint of friction across the high points of the obverse.
The amount of lustre evident across the reverse clearly indicates it was set aside as a store of value shortly after it was struck.
It remains a solid reminder of the most important sources of income for colonial Australia.
