The Brazilian 20,000 reis is among the largest gold coins ever struck for circulation anywhere in the world. Containing over 1.5 ounces of pure gold, it is a hefty testament to the wealth generated out of Brazil in the early 18th century.
Gold was discovered in Minas Gerais (South-Eastern Brazil) in the 1690s, which triggered a gold rush that rivalled anything the world has seen since.
By 1725, half the population of Brazil was living in southeastern Brazil. Officially, 800 metric tons of gold were sent to Portugal from Brazil across the 18th century.
The Brazilian 20,000 reis is among the largest gold coins ever struck for circulation anywhere in the world. Containing over 1.5 ounces of pure gold, it is a hefty testament to the wealth generated out of Brazil in the early 18th century.
The 20,000 reis gold coin was only struck between 1724 and 1727.
This particular example has a minimal amount of rubbing across the high points of both sides, and importantly retains intact rims and original surfaces.
