Bradbury Wilkinson & Co Uniface Ten Pound Advertising Note Uncirculated
Printed by BWC to showcase their abilities to the Australian banking industry.
In the latter half of the 19th century, competition between rival printing companies for a share in the exploding market for paper money was intense. Major printing companies such as Bradbury Wilkinson & Co (BWC), the American Bank Note Company (ABNC), Waterlow & Sons, as well as many smaller local printing companies were all actively soliciting business.
One way to demonstrate the quality of the printing company’s products to prospective clients was through beautifully engraved Printer’s Advertising Notes. Not only did they demonstrate the print quality of the printer's work, but they were also used to promote the products and services offered by the printing company and often feature the company's name and address.
This particular specimen note was prepared by Bradbury Wilkinson & Company as an advertisement for their ability to print colourful, ornate and secure banknotes for countries and banks located right around the world.
Advertising notes such as this have been sighted for markets in France and Argentina as well as Australia.
As it is known that BWC relocated to their Farringdon Road address in 1874, we believe that this "Ten Pound" Printer’s Advertising Note was likely printed in the latter half of the 1870s.
The main design of the note is based on the ten-pound note printed for the Australian and European Bank, which was in operation in Melbourne between 1874 and 1879. Once the bank was wound up in 1879, BWC may have felt there was nothing to stop them from making use of the design for their advertising note to be used in the Australian market.
This particular note retains crisp and natural paper and is devoid of any flicks, folds or other impediments.
Although it is not a banknote per se, it is an interesting addition to any collection of Australian pre-federation banknotes.
This is only the second such advertising note I've seen.
