Bank of New South Wales 1876 Issued 5 Pound Note about Fine
Front: Seated woman symbolizing commerce, ships in background
Back: Value at centre, blue circle in each corner
The condition of this note is typical of those recovered from the New England hoard.
The New England hoard was a cache of 123 Australian banknotes found under the floorboards of a house in Armidale (New South Wales).
The notes were issued between 1876 and 1884 by a range of different trading banks - the Australian Joint Stock Bank; the Bank of New South Wales; the Bank of New Zealand (Sydney) and the Commercial Bank of Sydney.
Before this hoard was discovered, notes from any Australian trading bank issued before 1901 were considered to be extremely rare. That remains the case to this day, notes from the New England notes are the most affordable issued pre-Federation notes available to collectors.
This particular note is a solid example of the "free" banking system that operated successfully in Australia prior to Federation. The paper is largely intact, although there is some loss of detail in the top right of the note. The edges are largely intact, and there are no major internal tears or weaknesses to speak of.
If you are planning to only ever get one issued pre-fed note for your collection, this would be an excellent choice.
