Bank of England 1955 White 5 Pounds Peppiatt Pick#345 Extremely Fine
The printing technique used for this note was in use for more than 3 centuries.
The Bank of England is now the central bank of England, and has been issuing paper currency notes since 1694. Those notes were actually fully hand-written, while notes issued after 1725 were partially printed, but still had to be endorsed and hand-signed by bank staff.
The printing technique used for the historic White Bank of England notes remained basically unchanged for more than 300 years - they remained on issue from the BoE until the 1950s.
The Bank of England's White series of banknotes were attacked in a determined and sophisticated counterfeiting effort by the Third Reich during the Second World War (known as Operation Bernhard), and were eventually replaced by a new series of currency notes that were printed with simultan and intaglio inks that are far more challenging for counterfeiters.
This particular note has some light folding through the body, yet retains bold paper quality. It is a solid representation of the archaic printing technique used by the Bank of England for more than 300 years.
