Australia WWI Victory Medal Private AEB Fender 4th Battalion KIA France 1916
A poignant memento of just one soldier's sacrifice for his country.
The humble appearance of this war medal belies the story behind it.
A painter by trade, Private Arthur Edmund Bateman Fender enlisted in the Great War effort on August 14th, 1915, at the tender age of 30.
He departed Sydney aboard the HMT Euripides on October 20th 1914, bound for service in the Middle East.
Fender's service record shows that he arrived at Gallipoli on April 5th 1915 and that he was presumed killed in action (KIA) there on August 14th, 1915.
He resurfaced a week later, and was accordingly re-classified as having been missing in action (MIA) for 1 week.
Fender then spent the next few months in and out of various hospitals - the extent of his injuries are not known.
On August 9th 1916, he was transferred to the 4th Battalion in the Australian Infantry Forces and was transported to France.
Fender was listed (correctly) as KIA in France just a week later, on August 16th 1916.
His personal effects were shipped back to his wife in Sydney, and the war effort obviously continued to roll on for years to come.
Fender's war service record shows that his wife took delivery of a memorial scroll, a memorial plaque and this Victory medal.
The medal shows some tone either side, the suspension loop is slightly bent.
The edge of the medal has been impressed with his service number, name and unit details:
346 PTE AEB FENDER 4 BN. AIF
How this medal came to be on the other side of the country to Fender's birthplace is not known, it remains a poignant reminder of the sacrifice he and so many others made in defence of our nation and it's freedoms.
