Australia 2018 Proof Coin Set - Armistice Centenary
This set marks 100 years since the end of fighting on the Western Front in WWI.
Australia has been producing proof year sets ever since decimal currency was introduced way back in 1966.
Proof coins are the same as those we see in our change, but are struck with specially prepared machinery on specially prepared blanks - the designs always stand out magnificently.
Feels and Looks Like It Will Stand the Test of Time
The first thing you appreciate when you pick up the 2018 6-Coin Proof Year Set is the superb quality of the presentation case - it definitely feels like it has been well made.
Even to the untrained eye, the graphic design is elegant and restrained - the certificate and the presentation case sleeve have a timeless look to them, and are sure to look just as good in 5, 10 or 20 years time as they do today.
Most importantly, the coins themselves have an obvious, high quality finish - they are easily far better quality than the coins we see struck for circulation, and exhibit a vivid cartwheeling lustre.
The 2018 Set Contains A $1 Coin Commemorating A Century Since the 1918 Armistice
In 2018, the Royal Australian Mint commemorates the centenary of the Armistice with a commemorative $1 coin. The reverse design of this commemorative $1 has two halves - the lower half shows a series of "stylised military motifs", while the upper half shows a number of growing poppies - flowers that have long been used as symbols of remembrance.
The 1918 Armistice - The Long-Awaited End To The War
Through October 1918, Allied troops advanced quickly along the Western Front and threatened the last German line of retreat.
In the first week of November, the British broke through German lines between the Schelde and the Sambre, and took 20,000 prisoners and 450 guns.
After this series of setbacks and defeats, the German forces finally collapsed and agreed to an armistice.
At 11 am on 11 November 1918, the armistice that had been signed by Germany came into effect - this finally signified the long-awaited end to the war.
As soon as the news was known, cities and towns around Australia erupted into celebrations.
Armistice Day - Remembrance Day
The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month attained a special significance in the post-war years.
The moment when hostilities ceased on the Western Front became universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died in the war.
This first modern world conflict had brought about the mobilisation of over 70 million people and left between 9 and 13 million dead, perhaps as many as one-third of them with no known grave.
The allied nations chose this day and time for the commemoration of their war dead.
In 1997, Governor-General Sir William Deane issued a proclamation formally declaring 11 November to be Remembrance Day, urging all Australians to observe one minute's silence at 11 am on 11 November each year to remember those who died or suffered for Australia's cause in all wars and armed conflicts.
