Australia has been producing proof year sets ever since decimal currency was introduced in 1966.
Proof coins are the same as those we see in our change, but are struck with specially prepared machinery on specially prepared blanks - the designs always stand out magnificently.
The Royal Australian Mint (RAM) proof set for 2015 celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of the RAM - it is a very significant milestone in the history of Australia's first wholly Australian-operated mint.
The RAM became a lasting and unique player in forging Australias national identity during the changeover to decimal currency.
To celebrate the Mints 50th anniversary, the 2015 proof coin set is highlighted by a gold-plated 50c coin with an innovative design.
The initial press release describes the coin in this way: The coins signature dodecagon shape is arranged into a honeycomb image, symbolising the industrious hive at the Royal Australian Mint.
It is appropriate that the first gold-plated proof coin to be released in any Australian proof set celebrates the golden anniversary of the Mint's establishment, it is sure to have enduring appeal to dedicated collectors.
The set is housed in a jewellery-style presentation case, and in turn is held in a colourful outer box.
The packaging features an interlocking series of dodecagonal shapes across it.
A wonderful memento commemorating an important numismatic event in Australia.
