Australia 2012 Baby Uncirculated Mint Coin Set Dot and the Kangaroo
Includes a dollar coin never issued into circulation.
Australia has been producing mint year sets packaged with a "baby" theme since 1993. The coins in mint sets are just the same as those we see in circulation, but are in perfect condition.
The special baby coin sets include a medallion that can be engraved with a special message for the newborn, and also has space for a photograph of bubs to be included. Uncirculated "mint" baby coin sets are produced in far lower numbers than the standard uncirculated "mint" sets, so they're far harder to get. Couple this with the fact that those parents & grandparents that didn't get them when they first came out are willing to pay over the odds to get them, and these sets are great to put away.
Between 2012 to 2014, the Royal Australian Mint’s Baby Set series featured a design theme based on "Dot and the Kangaroo".
This much-loved Australian children’s book was written by Ethel C. Pedley (way back!) in 1899, and follows the adventures of a young girl by the name of Dot, who is befriended in the Australian outback by a kangaroo and several other marsupials.
Countless Australian children across a number of generations have loved the stories of Dot and the Kangaroo. An animated movie on Dot and the Kangaroo was released in 1977, and was the second animated feature ever made in Australia and the first to find commercial success. The themes and emotional messages in the Dot and the Kangaroo animated movie are regarded as being timeless (even if the technology used in the movie - simple animation on top of live action backgrounds looks decidedly old school!)
The 2012 baby coin set includes a $1 coin that celebrates Ethel Pedley - author of Dot and the Kangaroo. This coin wasn't released into circulation, so the only way dedicated $1 coin collectors can get one is by busting out one from a set like this.
