Australia 2004 Proof Coin Set - Damaged Packaging
Obverse: Elizabeth II to right, legend around
Reverse: Circulating coin designs including holographic 1 dollar
The world's first circulating coin with a holographic reverse design is included in this set.
Australia has been producing proof year sets ever since decimal currency was introduced in 1966.
Proof coins are the same as those we see in our change, but are struck with specially prepared machinery on specially prepared blanks - the designs always stand out magnificently.
The 2004 proof set is popular with collectors because the one dollar coin included in it is the first circulating Australian coin with a holographic reverse.
Which brings us to an important point!
The technology the RAM used to apply the holographic reverse design was new at that time, and it turns out the chemicals used in either the colour or bonding process is causing a long-term reaction with the surfaces of many of the coins included in the set.
We use a stock image when listing products such as this - the images you see here are intended to represent the set you will receive if you order it, and are not intended to be of the exact set you will receive.
In our experience, most of the 2004 proof sets we handle have some peripheral tone on at least one of the coins included in it. As time passes, that ratio is increasing all the time.
If you purchase one of these sets, you should expect that at least one of the coins in this set has a peripheral tone, caused solely by the chemicals used in either the colour or bonding process.
We can handle dozens of these sets in any one year, so if you want to ask about the condition of any of the sets we have before you purchase it, please do so.
