Australia has been producing proof year sets ever since decimal currency was introduced in 1966.
Proof coins are the same as those we see in our change, but are struck with specially prepared machinery on specially prepared blanks - the designs always stand out magnificently.
The reverse of the 50c coin honouring the International Year of the Family was designed by Carolyn Rosser, who won a nation-wide competition. Although it wasn't particularly popular when it was released, the simplicity of the design has certainly stood the test of time.
As the years have passed, decimal variety collectors have found two different varieties - one with a wide date, and one with a narrow date.
The 1994 Australian 50 cent commemorative coin issued for circulation has two different varieties - the narrow date (6mm) and the wide date (7mm).
