Australia 1984 One Hundred Dollar Specimen Banknote Pair
In Official Presentation Folder
Uncirculated
Specimen Numbers: 51 / 550
Only 9 of these paper $100 note pairs in the official folders have been sighted at auction since the mid 1990's.
The market for Australian decimal specimen notes has changed markedly in the past couple of years - they are now slightly more readily available they used to be, and are circulating through the broader collector market far more than they used to.
The notes in this particular folder were printed prior to March 26th, 1984 - when Australia's paper $100 note was first introduced into circulation.
They are accompanied by a letter from the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia, Robert Johnson, dated April 9th, 1984.
The letter thanks Sharon Firth for her contribution in "...making the paper $100 note a reality."
Far Rarer Than Other Paper Banknote Specimens
Our analysis of auction results for Australian paper and polymer decimal specimen notes shows me that there have been just 9 different pairs of paper $100 specimen notes still in their official folders seen since the mid 1990's.
At least one of those pairs is known to have been split up.
The number of these presentation paper $100 folders is far lower than the same number of 1988 Bicentennial $10 polymer specimen notes - more than 30 of those have been seen over the same period of time.
The notes, folder and presentation letter here all remain in superb condition.
They remain a solid reminder of the excitement surrounding the introduction of Australia's most valuable circulating decimal banknote.
