Australia 1981 20¢ 3 1/2 Claw Scalloped Letters Obverse PCGS MS66
Struck at the Royal Canadian Mint (Winnipeg)
Wonderful glossy surfaces all over.
Industrial action occurred several times at the Royal Australian Mint (RAM) between 1979 and 1981.
Under questioning in the House of Representatives on September 9th 1981, the Commonwealth Treasurer (John Howard) explained that industrial action took place on the following dates:
-
3-15 September 1980 (9 days) Ban placed on late lunch hours and ban on repairing selected machinery.
-
13-25 November 1980 (9 days) Overtime duty banned.
-
14-25 November 1980 (8 days) Bans placed on repair of selected machinery.
-
20 March 1981 Selective work bans imposed.
In 1981, that industrial action forced senior staff at the RAM to outsource some of their production to a few of the other Mints in the Commonwealth - the Royal Mint in Wales and the Royal Canadian Mint both received orders for Australian circulating coinage.
Australian 20 cent coins ordinarily have 4 claws on the right paw of the platypus, however, the coins struck at the Royal Canadian Mint have a special identifying feature - the claw on the far right is half the length of each other claw. This characteristic is not seen on any other Australian 20 cent coin.
On the obverse of the Canadian-struck 20 cent coins, the Queen's eyebrow shows far more definition than coins struck at the Canberra or Llantrisant Mints.
The mintage figure of this coin (50 million according to Renniks) doesn't reflect just how scarce this coin is, particularly in premium condition.
