Australia 1980 Mint Set Double Bar 50 Cents
Includes the double bar 50 cent.Australia has been producing mint year sets ever since decimal currency was introduced in 1966.
The coins in mint sets are just the same as those we see in circulation, but are in perfect condition.
A very small number of 1980 mint sets such as this one included a 50¢ piece that had "double bars" in the space just to the right of the emu's head - these sets are particularly scarce and always keenly snapped up by sharp eyed variety collectors.
This variety coin came about due to a weakness in the die, one that was rectified from 1981 onwards.
The original dies used to produce the round 50¢ coin back in 1966 had a minor flaw to them - there were two small bars behind the emu's head on the reverse that cracked under pressure, so Canberra Mint staff removed them from the die face.
Although many 1966 50¢ coins show some of the double bar details, they aren't particularly strong.
Certain 50¢ coins from 1979 and 1980 are another matter altogether however - I understand that a senior member of the RAM staff effectively stormed off the job back in the late 70's, and urgent production requirements meant that an old master die or hub used to produce the 1966 50¢ coin reverse dies had to be hauled out of the archives to produce the dies required for 1979.
The resulting coins show a very clear double bar behind the emu's head - far stronger than any of the coins struck for circulation in 1966. These coins are now quite scarce, particularly in mint state.
