Australia 1970 Proof Coin Set - Damaged Packaging
Bicentennial of Captain Cook's Landing Commemorative
Obverse: Elizabeth II to right, legend around
Reverse: Circulating coin designs
This proof set contains Australia's first decimal commemorative coin.
When decimal currency was introduced in 1966, collectors around the country clamored for a decimal coin to be introduced for collectors to enjoy.
Surveys; competitions and petitions were run in the Australian Coin Review magazine, the design to be used was the topic of some debate for a few years.
The Royal Australian Mint relented in 1970 and introduced a dodecahedron fifty-cent piece featuring Captain James Cook, his signature, and a map of Australia on the reverse.
You can imagine just how keen collectors were to get their hands on these sets back in 1970 - the RAM hadn't released year sets of coins in 1967 or 1968, not only that but they didn't even release any 50 cent pieces in those years.
The new Captain Cook 50¢ was the first coin in the world to be manufactured in a dodecahedron shape, so that fact alone saw the mint set of interest to collectors around the world.
Proof coins are the same as those we see in our change, but are struck with specially prepared machinery on specially prepared blanks - the designs always stand out magnificently.
Special Note:
Sometimes we buy in individual coins or sets that don't meet the quality expectations that collectors have - sometimes the outer boxes are crushed or missing, other times a previous owner has written on the outer boxes.
If you buy one of these sets, you should not expect the packaging to be in as-issued condition - you should expect it to be bashed about!
The coins included in these sets are generally unaffected by any issues with the packaging, so if you're looking to open some sets up to access the individual coins, these should be fine.
