Ancient Rome (Imperial) 114-117 AD Trajan Silver Denarius Felicitas RIC 343 good VF
Very detailed obverse legend.
It is widely said that coins (and not just coins of the ancient world) reflect the values and standards of the culture and civilization that produces them. If this is indeed the case, the coins of Trajan are a glowing tribute to the Roman empire of his era.The Wikipedia entry for Trajan states the following by way of introduction to his period as ruler of the Roman Empire:
Trajan (/Ààtre…™d í…ôn/; Latin: Imperator Caesar Nerva Traianus Divi Nerva fili Augustus;[1] 18 September 53 AD ‚Äì 9 August 117 AD) was a Roman Emperor from 98 AD until his death. Officially declared by the senate as optimus princeps ("the best emperor"), Trajan is remembered as a successful soldier-emperor who presided over the greatest military expansion in Roman history, leading the empire to attain its maximum territorial extent by the time of his death. He is also known for his philanthropic rule, overseeing extensive public building programs and implementing social welfare policies, which earned him his enduring reputation as the second of the Five Good Emperors who presided over an era of peace and prosperity in the Mediterranean world.
Denarii issued under Trajan’s rule (such as the coin offered here) are often minted in a high quality metal, and are well struck, with a high relief. They are a testament to the high standard of craftsmanship in the Roman mints at that time, and the stability of the Roman economy and society.
When compared to statues of Trajan from that period, we can see that the portraits of this emperor on his coinage are realistic, and are engraved in fine detail - right down to each strand of hair and the wrinkles under his eyes.
The legend on either side of this coin is distinct and legible, the reverse design and legend is on a theme of optimism. Unlike many lauded rulers in history, Trajan's reputation has survived undiminished for nearly nineteen centuries.
This coin is an affordable and attractive coin dating to a Roman caesar universally regarded as the second of the Five Good Emperors who presided over an era of peace and prosperity in the Mediterranean world. }
