2013 Concept Note by Innovia - Aurora Security Feature
Printed by Innovia to demonstrate their “aurora” security feature.
The history of Australia's polymer banknotes is reasonably short but somewhat complex - Australia's polymer banknotes were first developed in the late 1960s by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and the University of Melbourne.
All of Australia's circulating polymer notes have been printed by Note Printing Australia (NPA), a division of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). In 1996, the RBA and a company named Innovia Films entered into a joint venture to create Securency International.
Innovia acquired the RBA's 50% share in the business in February 2013, the renamed entity is now known as Innovia Security. According to their website, "Innovia Security is the supplier of Guardian®, the world's most sophisticated banknote substrate which is currently issued on 78 denominations in 24 countries worldwide."
Concept notes such as this one are printed in order to give potential customers (primarily national governments) a physical example of the technology used in the production of banknotes. Promotional literature and even videos are one thing, but actually seeing and feeling a security feature in the hand is something else altogether. Although such notes are technically not "test" notes (they are not printed to test any aspect of the note's durability etc), they are regarded as a subset of such by collectors that specialize in this field. They are a scarce and interesting adjunct to any collection of Australian polymer banknotes, particularly for those interested in the planning and printing of the notes.
This is one of four concept notes printed by Innovia to tangibly represent the security devices available on the banknotes they print.
The four types of concept note are:
-
Aurora - launched in Issue 3 of "Specimen" - "The Biannual Journal of Guardian" at The Currency Conference, held in Washington in 2014.
-
Eclipse
-
Horizon - launched in Issue 2 of "Specimen" - "The Biannual Journal of Guardian" at The Currency Conference, held in Athens in 2013.
-
Latitude
Innovia uses the term "Aurora" to describe the "...revolutionary colour-switching effect that uses leading-edge, high-security inks that project a rich pearlescent colour when viewed in reflection and a strong, bold and contrasting colour when viewed at other angles or in transmission."
