A truly scarce joint coin issue marking the Duyfken's Voyage of Discovery.
On March 29th 2006, a range of commemorative coins marking the 400th anniversary of the Dutch ship Duyfken's voyage of discovery were released - this voyage resulted in the first recorded map of the Southern continent which came to be known as Terra Australis and later, Australia.
The joint coin issue between Australia and The Netherlands is a rare release and was intended to be a symbol of the historical links between the two countries. The Australian coins were minted at the RAM in Canberra, following an 18 month collaboration between the RAM and the Royal Dutch Mint.
The Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Dr Balkenende said, "The launch of the coins to mark the arrival of the Duyfken to Australia's shore is part of is a year of events and celebrations to mark both this occasion and the strong links between the Dutch and Australians. The release of the coins symbolises the association between these two countries and friends."
The Royal Australian Mint produced 3 coins in the program: a gold coin; a silver coin and general collectable coin.
The Royal Netherlands Mint produced two collector coins in their program: a gold coin and a silver coin.
This particular set includes the two gold and the two silver coins - 2 each from Australia and the Netherlands respectively, and comes packaged in an impressive wooden case with numbered certificate.
Although mintage figures on this set are quite hard to come by, one reference book states that just 328 of these sets were ever released.
