This is a collectible and affordable example of Australia's 1st commemorative $5 note.
Australia's very first commemorative $5 note was issued throughout 2001, the year that Australia celebrated 100 years as a federated nation.
Some of these notes can be particularly valuable if they have the right serial numbers and if they're in mint condition. The rarest 2001 $5 notes can sell for up to $500 each.
Although more than 120 million of these notes were printed, it is believed that many of them have been withdrawn from circulation since then - it's not often at all that you'll see one in your change today, particularly in decent condition.
Australia's transition to polymer technology in the 1990s resulted in a vast increase in the number of collectors of decimal banknotes. That happened again between 2016 and 2020 as the Next Generation Banknote series was introduced, and yet again when the Queen passed away in September 2022.
As this broad demand base becomes more sophisticated, collectors will no doubt continue to purchase rarer and higher-quality notes.
The notes that we offer here are in decent condition but aren't mint. An experienced collector would describe them as being in Extremely Fine or better quality.
The body of the notes remains bright, the colours are still strong and the edges are completely intact. Although they have some light folding throughout the body, they look fantastic.
The great thing about getting notes like this is they are a lot more affordable than notes that are in mint condition and cost a fraction of the price.
Because they are already slightly folded, you don't have to worry about members of the family handling them if you get them out.
They're great to use to show young folks what our money was like at this exciting time in our national history.
