2000 One Dollar Ten Cent Mule good VF
One Dollar Ten Cent "Mule" 2000 good VF
Obverse: Elizabeth II to right, legend around
Reverse: Mob of 'roos, denomination below
This scarce and hugely popular decimal coin has solid details with great eye appeal for the money.
The 2000 one dollar / ten-cent mule has probably done more to get the general public to take an interest in their coins than any other in the past five years or so.
A mule is the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse - it is a hybrid animal from genetically different parents.
The term "mule" is used by coin collectors to describe coins struck with dies intended for two different coins - the 2000 One Dollar Mule was struck with a one dollar reverse and a ten cent obverse die. They are easily distinguished from the regular dollar coins from that year by the thicker obverse rim - the ten cent obverse die is smaller than a one dollar obverse die, and when it was used on a one dollar planchet, extra metal is pushed towards the edge of the coin.
Although these coins can still (sometimes) be gotten from change, dedicated collectors really need to "noodle" through many thousands of dollar coins to get them.
The appeal of the one dollar mule is so high that many collectors would rather pay someone else that's found one, and save themselves the bother of searching!
This example has circulated to a reasonable degree, however retains more detail to it than most. It has an attractive patina, and is well centred.
It is perfect for the decimal coin collector keen to pick up this scarce and popular variety without breaking the bank.
