Junk silver coins is a term used in North America to refer to bulk quantities of silver coins used as legal tender in the US prior to 1965, and are now traded in bulk for their silver value. The term junk describes the fact that these coins don't have any numismatic or collector value.
Many investors prefer buying silver this way because it's in a form that they know and trust. A range of Australian silver coins were struck between 1910 and 1966, there is an active market for these coins also.
"Pre" silver. The term "pre" refers to the Imperial silver coins (threepences, sixpences shillings and florins) that were issued in Australia between 1910 and 1945.
These coins were made with 92.50% (Sterling) silver - 1910 is the earliest date because that was the first year that the Australian Commonwealth Government issued silver coins. 1945 is the final date because the Commonwealth Government reduced the percentage of silver in Australian coins to 50% from 1946 onwards.
Other countries in the British Commonwealth also issued coins in 92.5% pure silver - it wasn't unusual at all for these coins also to be found in circulation in Australia, modest quantities may still be seen in these bags today.
The technical specifications of each of the type of coins that can be found in these bags of "junk" silver are as follows:
Coin | Face Value | Gross Weight | Nett Weight | ASW / Coin |
Florin | 20¢ | 11.31g | 10.46g | 0.34ozt |
Shilling | 10¢ | 5.66g | 5.23g | 0.17ozt |
Sixpence | 5¢ | 2.83g | 2.62g | 0.08ozt |
Threepence | 2.5¢ | 1.41g | 1.31g | 0.04ozt |
As you can see, all of the coins are the same weight in proportion to each other - one florin is the same weight as two shillings, which is the same weight as four sixpences and the same weight as eight threepences.
As these coins are generally purchased by dealers on an ad-hoc basis from the general public, pre silver coins are generally sold in mixed bulk lots - each bag can contain any mix of the four denominations listed above. Regardless of the mix of coins included, the total weight of pure silver in any bag comes to 925 grams, or 29.74 troy ounces.
Delivery will be made via the Australia Post eParcel system - trackable online, and generally takes less than a week to reach anywhere in the country from Fremantle.
