Several popular investment newsletter writers recommend that investors buy silver bars and junk silver coins as a hedge against economic & monetary uncertainty.
Buying kilo bars of silver in Australia is easy enough, you just need to get in touch with the Perth Mint or the bullion dealer in your local Yellow Pages to get as many as you want. But many Australians have no idea what junk silver coins are, whether we have them in Australia and where you can buy them.
Junk silver coins is a term used in North America to refer to bulk quantities of silver coins that were actually used as legal tender in the US prior to 1965, and are now traded in bulk for their silver value. The junk part of the name refers to the fact that these coins don't have any numismatic or collector value.
US dimes; quarters; dollars and half dollars struck before 1965 have a 90% pure silver content many investors prefer buying silver this way because it's in a form that they know and trust. We have obviously never used dimes or quarters here in Australia, so what did we have? There are 3 basic types of junk silver coins here in Australia.
"Post" 1920 British Silver Coins - This term describes the batch that we have available here.
"Post" Silver coins are the Imperial silver coins (threepences, sixpences shillings and florins) that were issued in Great Britan between 1920 and 1946. They're called "post" 1920 silver coins because they are all produced after or "post" 1920.
That date is important, because that is when the British government changed the amount of silver in Britain's circulating silver coinage from 92.50% to 50%.
These coins are all made with 50.00% silver, and were struck between 1946 and 1964. 1964 is the final date because that was the final year coins were produced before decimal currency was introduced in 1966.
This bag weighs exactly 1 kilogram, which means 500g of pure silver is included - 16.075 troy ounces.
Please be advised that the coins in each batch will depend entirely on what we buy, and we can make no commitment on the composition of any bag other than it will weigh 1 kilogram and it will contain British silver coins struck between 1946 and 1964.
If you're looking to put together date sets of these coins, or are looking for a particular mix of denominations, be advised that we can't and don't guarantee you'll get a precise mix of dates and denominations.
