1kg Kilo Bag of Mixed British Silver Coins Pre 1920 (92.5% Pure)
This bag contains a full kilogram of British issued before 1920.
Junk silver coins is a term used in North America to refer to bulk quantities of silver coins used as legal tender in the US prior to 1965, and are now traded in bulk for their silver value. The term junk describes the fact that these coins don't have any numismatic or collector value.
Many investors prefer buying silver this way because it's in a form that they know and trust.
British silver coins were used in Australia before our own national coins were struck from 1910. In fact, British coins remained in circulation until at least the 1930's.
They are still seen in Australian cupboards and collections today.
Just as we did in Australia, Great Britain changed the purity of its circulating silver coins several times in the past century:
British milled coinage issued from around 1662 were struck in 92.5% pure (sterling) silver, right through to the end of World War I in 1919
In 1920, the circulating silver coins were issued in 50% purity, they remained at that standard until after the end of World War II, when they were replaced by copper-nickel coins from 1947 onwards.
The coins in this bag were all made in 92.50% (Sterling) silver, nearly all of them feature the portrait of either King Edward VII or Queen Victoria. There may be a few scattered coins with the portrait of King George III in among them, but make no mistake - these coins have circulated heavily!
You are very unlikely to find any numismatic coins in this batch, although we have done our best to remove any damaged coins.
If you're into junk silver and are looking for something a little more historic and interesting than your usual fare, this bag makes for excellent buying.
