1997 5 Dollars Uncut Block of Eight - Hong Kong Handover
Mintage: 5,000
A scarce uncut collectable from a scarce year for the polymer $5 note.
The return of Hong Kong to the sovereignty of the mainland Chinese government was one of the most widely anticipated events of the late 20th century.
Collectables (both official and unofficial) were produced on an unprecedented scale, with many collectors believing that heirlooms from the last days of independent Hong Kong rule would be treasured by future generations.
Demand for uncut polymer Australian notes was strong in South East Asia in the late 1990's so some bright spark in the NPA marketing department clearly thought that there would be demand for Australian notes related to the occasion.
Just 5,000 of these uncut polymer $5 blocks with special serial numbers (not issued for circulation) printed in red were put into specially produced folders and sold to collectors both in Australia and overseas - this is of course one of them.
5,000 is a tiny mintage for banknotes by world standards, and although these notes don't fall within the standard range of Australian note collectors, they remain very keenly sought.
