An incredibly rare chunk of Australian economic history.
Bernie Fraser was the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia between September 19th 1989 and September 17th 1996. Interestingly for Australian banknote collectors, he was also Secretary to the Treasury between September 19th 1984 and September 18th 1989.
Since retiring from public service, Fraser has joined the board of several superannuation funds,
Edward Evans was Secretary to the Treasury between May 24th 1993 and April 26th 2001.
Paper $50 notes featuring the signatures of these two men circulated for a much shorter period than the above dates might indicate - they were not issued into circulation until December 1993 and remained in use until they were replaced by the polymer $50 on October 4th 1995.
All paper $50 notes were actively withdrawn following the introduction of the polymer $50 note, and due to the relatively high face value that bundles such as this have, very few were set aside by the general public in the first place.
This is probably the 3rd paper $50 bundle I've ever seen - I don't recall the last time I saw a paper $50 bundle at auction - the research into auction records I've done doesn't yield any at all (of any signature combination) for at least the past 5 years. With that kind of rarity, this bundle is most likely rarer than most Australian paper decimal star notes.
The notes in this particular bundle all retain crisp and natural paper. The edges are devoid of toning or rubbing, the run of serial numbers is intact throughout.
It is a rare opportunity to set aside a chunk of Australian economic history from the latter years of the 20th century, the more we switch to a cashless society, the rarer notes such as this become.
