Fraser Cole $10 Plate Letters
Recent research by the numismatist Dennis Wood has shown that partway through the production of the Fraser / Cole $10 notes, NPA stopped using Plate Identification Letters (PIL’s).
An explanation for this change isn’t yet widely known, it appears that notes without the plate letters came towards the end of the production run.
When they’re included, the location of the plate identification letter is on the left-hand side of the front of the note, within the black intaglio design about 25mm above the “W” in B.W.Fraser’s signature.
Current research indicates that the variety without the plate identification letter is the scarcer of the two varieties of this note.
