1988 Bicentennial Coin and Note Collection - Melbourne International Coin Fair Edition
Mintage - 5,000
Exclusively released at the Melbourne Coin Fair in July 1988, the $5 note has very low serials.
Australian memorabilia was in a boom period right throughout the Bicentennial year, coins sets were particularly popular as they were officially produced by the Australian government.
The RAM and NPA really pulled one out of the bag when they came up with this product - it has no less than six important commemoratives in it:
- $2 Aluminum bronze proof: released for the first time;
- $2 LQG "last prefix" paper note: one of the very last $2 notes printed in Australia;
- $5 Aluminum bronze proof: the first Australian coin of this denomination ever produced;
- $5 Johnston Fraser "gothic" serials paper note: part of a special print run exclusively for this set (QAH notes could not be obtained from circulation);
- $10 Silver proof: containing a full 20g of sterling silver;
- $10 Polymer "AA" serials note: the first polymer note issued anywhere in the world.
The coins and notes in this set are in perfect condition, as is the outer folder.
Interestingly, the serial number of the paper $5 note corresponds with the serial number for the set!
This set is the rarer Coin Fair Edition - a small number were released at the Melbourne International Coin Fair, held in July 1988.
It is identified by the exclusive blue sash that goes around the folder, as well as a limited edition certificate that is inside the album.
The serials on the $5 note in this album are within the first 5,000 printed with this prefix - that is an incredibly low mintage for a single Australian paper decimal note.
