Featured works clockwise from top:
St Paul's Cathedral: The foundation stone was laid on 21st June, 1675; the final stone was placed on the cupola by Wren's son in 1710. In those 35 years, the great building had risen from the ruins of the medievil structure, all that remained after the Great Fire of London in 1666.
Pembroke College Chapel: One of the first commissions of Wren's career, from his uncle, the Bishop if Ely in 1663. In its command of the classical idion, it gives the first sign of his remarkable talent.
The Royal Hospital, Greenwich: A naval counterpart of the military hospital, it was built for seamen as a thanks offering after the victory of La Hogue under the terms of a Royal Charter issued in1694.
Emmanuel College, Cambridge: Begun in 1668, Wren used related blocks for the first time, rather than a single element as in Pembroke College Chapel. The buiding consists of a long gallery supported on an open arcade.
The Royal Observatory, Greenwich: This was a commision of special interest to Wren in view of his own interest in astronomy. It was built by order of King CharlesII in 1675 for the use of John Flamsteed, the first Astronomer Royal.
St Lawrence, Jewry, City of London: Started in 1671, this is the church of the Corporation of London. It was reduced to a shell in 1940 but perfectly restored within the walls that miraculously survived the blitz.
The medal, case, and certificate are all included and remain in excellent condition.
