This incredibly scarce pair of medallions marks a unique WA milestone.
When the population of Western Australia passed 1 million people in 1971, it was a cause for celebration right across the WA community - the number of people in this remote and vast state had finally reached a figure that unequivocally showed it was a market that was significant in size.
The medals were struck by Allan J Olson Pty Ltd, badge and medallion manufacturers in Adelaide, and were among the very first struck after the company was formed. The dies used to strike the medallions were engraved by Ernest Snook, who had formerly worked for S Schlank & Co Ltd, also of Adelaide. The reverse design is particularly attractive, competently engraved and effectively struck - no mean feat for medallions of this size and in this relief.
The designs for each of the medallions was the same, regardless of the metal used.
The mintage figures quoted by Carlisle for these medallions are incredibly low - no published information is readily available, however more research will no doubt explain why so few were minted.
With a population of 1 million people, I would have thought that there'd be more than 50 people that read the Sunday Times and listened to Radio 6KY back in 1971!
