This note is one of Australia's most prized decimal rarities.
Setting aside star replacement notes and first/last prefixes, the Coombs Randall $20 note is (far and away) the rarest Australian paper decimal note issued into circulation.
A little more than a decade ago, my research into the availability of Uncirculated examples of the Coombs Randall 20 dollar note through auction over the preceding decade had shown me that before July 2014, just one single note in this condition had been offered, while there were 5 consecutive pairs and one consecutive trio.
That is an incredibly low number of notes - far lower than many star replacement notes that command much higher sums!
Prior to July 2014, the most recent Uncirculated note to be offered was via Downie's Auction 301, held in February 2009. Lot 1616 was described by Downie's as being "...a full bodied natural Unc, with full sheen." It sold for a hammer price of $4,000, for a nett price of $4,770.
A little more than a decade on, I believe this note offers incredible value for money - it is essential to any complete set of Australian paper decimal notes, is incredibly rare, and is in impeccable condition.
When I consider how seldom we see these in decent grade against the availability of the more valuable decimal star replacement notes, with the stats mentioned above, this R402 leaves them all in the shade!
A number of Australia's rarer decimal circulating coins have increased in value markedly in recent years (I'm thinking specifically of the 1966 Wavy baseline 20 cent coin, as well as decimal error coins, among others), yet this note is rarer and more important than all of them. Keep in mind that a Choice Uncirculated 1966 WBL 20 cent, presently trading at $3,750, with this note at $4,950, and remember that this note has 100 times the purchasing power to see what I mean.
The R402 is a real trophy note, I reckon this one is excellent to put away for a decade or two.
