This may be the only flap error seen on a Coombs Randall note.
Corner flaps are one of the most obvious errors seen on a paper decimal banknote - even a non-collector without any exposure to the market for items like this can appreciate just how rare they are.
When I review Mick Vort-Ronald's excellent book on the auction results for error banknotes (Australian Banknote Errors Softcover Book by Mick Vort-Ronald), I thought I could see by the number of different flap errors Mick has listed as having turned up at auction over the past few decades that this type of printing error is seen much less on the smaller notes than it is on the larger notes. I don't know why I thought that might be the case - one would think a paper sheet of one size has just as much chance of flipping over during the production process than any other.
Actually comparing the known population against the number of notes printed and their sizes reveals that answer isn't quite as appealing! Here's a table that compare the rarity of a flap error on a paper decimal banknote with the dimensions of each note, as well as the total number printed for each denomination.
Denomination | Width | Height | # Printed | # of Flap Errors | Error / Total | |
One Dollar | 1 | 140 | 70 | 1,549,030,240 | 3 | 516,343,413 |
Two Dollars | 2 | 147 | 75 | 4,939,743,480 | 23 | 214,771,456 |
Five Dollars | 5 | 152 | 76 | 2,881,849,900 | 13 | 221,680,762 |
Ten Dollars | 10 | 156 | 78 | 3,515,518,320 | 36 | 97,653,287 |
Twenty Dollars | 20 | 160 | 81 | 10,057,406260 | 60 | 167,623,438 |
Fifty Dollars | 50 | 167 | 85 | 40,543,465,100 | 47 | 862,626,917 |
Hundred Dollars | 100 | 173 | 82 | 21,209,440,409 | 23 | 922,149,583 |
Based on Mick's data. it looks like only 3 paper one dollar notes with a flap error have been seen at auction. With just 13 examples known, the next lowest is the paper 5 dollar note.
I'm no data scientist (Clearly!), so I can't see any obvious pattern in the data above that might explain why a flap error is scarcer on some denominations than another.
The one dollar note is the smallest; the ten dollar is easily the rarest relative to the number of those notes printed, but the five dollar is rarer still.
Going on Mick's auction records, this note is the just the second seen on a C of A five dollar note - the other one was a Phillips Randall; was graded Very Fine and sold for $1,550 hammer in an IAG auction in May 1997.
I can't find another paper flap error on a Coombs Randall note, which makes this a real prize.
The paper is natural, but has toned over the years since it was issued. There is some modest folding throughout the body, it is a rare and very early error for this type.
