1954 Ten Shilling Coombs/Wilson R16 Solid Serial
Front: Watermark pane at left, value and serials at middle, Matthew Flinders at right
Back: (Old) Parliament House, values in each corner and at bottom centre
Period on Issue: 23 July 1954 ~ July 1961
Mintage: 557,548,000 (Which means no more than 5,017 solid serial number notes were ever printed of this type)
This is a crisp and natural example of a scarce ten shilling note.
In the context of collectible banknotes, the term "solid serial" describes the serial number on a note where all the digits are the same. For example, 888888 or 777777 would be considered solid serial numbers.
The solid serial number does not need to include the prefix (for example AH/01), but just describes the numbers after the prefix.
Solid serial numbers are highly prized by collectors for their rarity and "cool factor".
The exact rarity of each solid serial number note depends on the number of digits in the serial number - up until 2016, most Australian banknotes had 6 digits in the serial number, which means there were a million notes printed with each prefix.
In a print run of any single prefix, there can be 9 solid serial numbers: 111111; 222222; 333333; 444444; 555555; 666666; 777777; 888888 and 999999, which means that just 0.0009% notes in any print run will have a solid serial number.
9 notes in a million is a ratio of 111,111 to 1.
That is an exponential increase in rarity over the standard notes that a solid serial is taken from!
The total mintage for the 1954 ten shilling note is 557,548,000, which means no more than 5,017 solid serial number notes were ever printed of this type. Out of that entire potential population, the number of solid serial number notes that remain available to collectors today can be counted on one hand, the number in this condition is lower again.
This is an incredible opportunity for the discerning note collector to acquire a note that is exponentially rarer than the standard R16 and has an unequivocal "cool" factor. The paper is crisp and there are no flicks, creases or folds evident at all.
