1952 Threepence Obverse Elliptical Brockage Error about Unc
Obverse: Bust of George VI to left, legend around
Reverse: Three sheaves of wheat, date legend and denomination around
Weight: 1.410 grams | Rim width: 0.86mm ~ 2.19mm
This spectacular error coin has been well cared for.
I have to say that I'm at a loss to confidently understand how an error like this can happen - the weight is exactly what we'd expect a threepence in this condition to be, which confirms a section of the planchet has not been separated.
The upper 2/3rd's of the obverse of the coin clearly show that another coin came into contact with the planchet.
The thickness of the rim varies markedly - the rim at the apex of the brockage section (12 o'clock on both sides) runs to 2.19mm, while at the apex of the regular section (6 o'clock on both sides) runs to 0.86mm.
The reverse does not show any signs of having been double struck, which indicates to me the coin could be a brockage with an elliplical planchet that fell away after being struck.
It's a shame the elliptical planchet has long been separated from this brockage, it would have been neat to see the two of them together!
It is also interesting to see the die crack that is evident at 12 o'clock on the reverse is also evident in the same section of the brockage on the obverse.
